We started talking to them about the switch a while ago when we started using a light-up clock. They know that it is night/sleep time until their clock turns green at 7:00 a.m., when they can call for me to come get them. I must say that so far, this thing has worked like a charm. In the past month, I have only heard them awake before 7:00 a handful of times. We also use the clock for nap time. When it came time to switch to a toddler bed, we told them that they could call for us or come get us when their clock turned green....
So far, Jackson has not gotten out of his bed on his own. Not once. That boy loves his new bed and Thomas pillow! In fact, he has even told me a few times that he's tired and WANTS to go to bed. Neither of the kids has ever asked me if they could go to bed or take a nap. Whenever Jackson wakes up, he just says, "Mommy, my clock's green, come get me." I just think it's funny that we tell him he can just get out on his own if he wants (and he sees Sofie do it), but he doesn't, which is fine by me!
Sofie, on the other hand, was a different story. She as up and down from her bed a gazillion times those first few days. She would go through her clothes in her dresser and try to change her clothes, or just keep running out to the living room, squealing with delight, and running back into her room. She would appear in our room at 4:00 in the morning. She was everywhere with her new found freedom and she loved it! Now, a week into it, she is doing waaaay better. Bed times are going pretty smoothly and nap time is not near the struggle that it was a week ago.
This is yet another example of how I do things exactly the same for both, yet they respond to it in totally different ways!
